SILICONE AND SALINE BREAST IMPLANTS

When considering breast implants, many doctors will offer the two types of implants approved by the FDA: silicone and saline. Both silicone and saline implants consist of an outer silicone shell. What differs between the two is what fills these shells and the consistency of the material.

• Saline breast implants contain a sterile saltwater solution. The implant is inserted empty and is then filled with saltwater. Saline implants are made available to patients aged 18 and over for breast augmentation or to patients of any age for breast reconstruction.
• Silicone breast implants differ from saline implants in that they are pre-filled with silicone gel. This gel is thick and sticky to mimic the consistency of human fat closely. Many patients who receive silicone implants choose this option because they look and feel closer to natural breasts.
